When
he got turned down after the first set of auditions, Mikey wasn't
too downhearted. At the time he was working as a mechanic, but
he was so determined to make it in showbiz that he knew some-thing
else would come along. He probably didn't imagine it would be
a second chance with Boyzone. He'd always loved songwriting, and
had been the lead vocalist in a band called 'Ivory' which had
performed covers around local pubs. At the auditions he sang 'Layla'
by Eric Clapton, and Meatloaf's 'Two Out of Three Ain't Bad'.

The
Best Thing About Being In Boyzone:
We've visited countries I'd never have been visited had it been
for the band, and I've met some very nice people. It's all an
experience that can't be bought".
What
kind of product would you like to see invented during the 21st
century?
i'd really like to have a 'beam me up Scottie machine'! You know,
those it would be really handy to be able to be transformed from
one place to the other without having to put up with the traffic.
I think that would be a great invention, very useful!
What
do you think has been the best invention of your lifetime so far?
The Rubiks Cube was a very important of it's time, I reckon. It
confused the hell out of everybody, got everybody's brains busy.
I was a very lucky, I managed to solve it a few times. It was
really easy - you just had to put a screwdriver in the corner
and it would fall apart. Then you could put it back together with
all the colours in the right places! DVDs are very good as well,
video on CD machines, they're really handy for travelling. And
also Buzz Board machines, those motorised skateboards we have
on the tours. they're a lot of fun and handy for getting about
backstage!
What have been your favourite bands/artists of the 1990's?
I suppose Radiohead - Creep was a very good track. High and Dry
I like a lot, Travis - I loved their Why Does It Always Rain On
Me single. Of course Oasis, they've done loads of great stuff...
It's very hard to pick out a few, actually...
What
new bands/artists of this year are you looking forward to hearing
more from in the year 2000?
I reckon there's going to be a massive revival of artists from
the 60's and 70's! And probably the 80's aswell. I think there'll
be a big blast from the past next year. People like David Bowie,
Rolling Stones. That would be great. I'm looking forward to more
stuff from Boyzone too, of course!
Who
would you give a millennium award to?
To somebody like Mother Teresa I think. She's one of the main
people who springs to mind. She dedicated her life to the world
very unselfishly and it's very sad that she's gone she should
be given a sainthood rather than an award.
What
5 items would you bury in a time capsule for people to learn more
about your life in the 20th century?
My heart. My soul. My mind. My album. And a bottle of Jack Daniels
for them to drink while they're learning about me! That would
be very educational I reckon!
What
will be your motto for the year 2000?
I think something like 'face it, nothing changes!'. nodoby ever
sticks to their new year's resolutions after about two weeks,
do they!
What
were the Boyzone highlights of 1999?
The tour we did over the summer, that was a great time. The decision
to take a few months out to embark on our own projects, I think
that was good for all of us. Also the excitement of recording
my own solo album. It's half way recorded now, not quite finished.
But hopefully it'll be out in the year 2000, fingers crossed!
