had been modelling and acting since the age of 16, and made a
brief appearance at the beginning of 'The Commitments'. He discovered
his singing talents while doing karaoke at Butlins. When he heard
about the auditions for the band through a friend, he was so desperate
to find out when and where to go, he telephoned Irish newspaper
'The Star' and spoke to a journalist there who pointed Stephen
in the right direction. Fortunately he made it eventually and
performed the Lionel Richie tune "Hello", and 'Right Here Waiting
' by Richard Marx

The
Best Thing About Being In Boyzone:
"Getting to meet people and travelling the world".
What
kind of product would you like to see invented during the 21st
century?
A flying car, or something like that. Or a kind of time machine
that I could get in, then step out anywhere in the world. Something
that travels very quickly to avoid all those longhaul flights.
Something like that.
What
do you think has been the best invention of your lifetime so far?
The phone! The mobile phone is the best invention ever. Of course!
Nokia are my favourite.
What have been your favourite bands/artists of the 1990's?
The Corrs, Britney Spears, Boyzone, Backstreet Boys. There's been
loads!
What
new bands/artists of this year are you looking forward to hearing
more from in the year 2000?
The Irish ones - there's Westlife, of course. B*Witched. I like
Christina Aguilera a lot too. And Stephen Gately's going to be
huge next year too, I heard! There's a big buzz going around him!
Who
would you give a millennium award to?
To Eloy. For being cool and for being there for me during a difficult
time.
What
5 items would you bury in a time capsule for people to learn more
about your life in the 20th century?
A book about meditation. Some old family photos. Some Boyzone
CD's. A bottle of Gucci after-shave. Autographs of famous people
for whoever finds the box to give to their friends! A special
prize for finding the box!
What
will be your motto for the year 2000?
It's a new beginning. Enjoy it, don't destroy it!
What
were the Boyzone highlights of 1999?
The response I got when I came out. Our greatest hits CD being
at the top of the album charts for so long. And recording my solo
album. That's been a big highlight of this year too, although
it won't be out until this year...
